We want to thank you for supporting Kisi in 2016. Your passion and innovation continues to drive us, and pushed us to deliver even more new products and features in 2016. We especially want to thank everyone who helped us by attending our events, recommending Kisi to others, and providing feedback on our products. Here are the highlights of what happened at Kisi in 2016.
Released new Kisi Pro Controller with powerful new capabilities
After months of feedback and testing, we released the new controllers in October 2016. Kisi Pro Controllers include a completely new control board which features ethernet connectivity that creates a reliable connection to the cloud. They run using Electric Imp chips to connect to the cloud; components known for their efficient IoT connection, high security, and seamless scalability.
Here’s a review of what our customers were most excited about:
- Faster and more reliable unlocks: Kisi can now be connected via ethernet while having wifi as a backup
- Compatible with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi networks streamlining the setup process
- Power inputs for locks – now locks can now be powered by the Kisi Controller instead of a 3rd party adapter

Announced Kisi Pro Readers & NFC Cards set for 2017 release
Following the Kisi Pro Controller launch, we announced Kisi Pro Readers in early December. The new readers will be able to accept all Kisi credentials – remote, smartphone, and our new Kisi Passes. They are available for pre-order now and shipping will begin in February 2017.
Kisi Pro Readers & Passes are built for the future. Traditional HID proximity readers support outdated protocols which are insecure and can be easily hacked & misused. We have designed readers that are forward compatible with technology like NFC, BLE, and other secure protocols that will be used for all Kisi access credentials
Built Robust Software Integrations
On the software side, we were busy building robust integrations with vendors that provide the following services: team communication, identity management, coworking member management, payroll, and visitor management. A few highlights of integrations launched in 2016:
Cobot Coworking Member Management
In February, we were proud to announce our integration with the space-management platform – Cobot.
Cobot is a web-based management application made specifically for co-working that has been successfully helping spaces manage their users and grow their communities. Cobot helps with management, convenience, and advice for all of your coworking space members. Now, Cobot can also be used to share access to your space via Kisi Access Control.
With this integration, every time a member is added to Cobot, they are issued access to a specific Kisi Group, with customizable levels of access. To learn how to set it up, checkout the Cobot and Kisi integration page.
OfficeR&D Coworking Member Management
We also announced an integration with OfficeR&D – a beautiful member management platform that makes life easy for coworking owners across Europe and worldwide.
Office R&D is built specifically for coworking spaces, serviced offices and business centers. It enables the office managers to handle all critical processes of the space in a very visual and intuitive way. With this integration, every time a member is added to Office R&D, they are issued access to a specific Kisi Group, with customizable levels of access.
To learn how to get this integration setup, as well a full list of benefits of integrating Kisi with OfficeR&D, visit the integration page on the Kisi website.
Launched our MeetUp Group: Office Automation for IT
In October, we kicked off the launch of Kisi Pro Controllers at our first Office Automation for IT MeetUp at DigitalOcean in NYC. Kisi admins and members of the IT community gathered over delicious pizza, cold beer to hear from co-founder Bernhard Mehl, who gave a detailed run through on the technical specifications for these new controllers.
Every day we talk about the unique solutions and problems the modern IT manager faces. However publicly there was no forum where people are actually talking about the evolving role of IT in regards to IoT. So we came up with this MeetUp and the response was overwhelming and the huge Digital Ocean event floor was fully packed.
Join our Office Automation for IT MeetUp group for events in NYC (soon maybe SF too!) in 2017.
Moved into New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard
In July, we parted ways with our DUMBO, Brooklyn office to join the New Lab in Brooklyn Navy Yard. We’re thrilled to be part of a growing community of innovative hardware entrepreneurs working with emerging technologies everyday.
If you’re in the NYC area, stop by our New Lab showroom for a tour of one of the most cutting edge technology centers in the world.
Featured ISC East Exhibitor in NYC
Back in November, Kisi exhibited at ISC East, the international security conference and exposition at Javits Center in NYC. We had a booth to educated those in attendance about our access control system and latest technology. Our product was a ‘featured product’ of the event and was featured at the grand entrance — a big accomplishment for our hardware engineers!
We got many visitors from the IT side who were very open minded and had innovative approaches in mind without risking their security. For us that was probably the major change to previous years where we got a lot of interest from legacy providers who saw new technologies as a gimmick. See you in 2017!
Developed Drone Guard: Doorman of the Future
This year we transformed our R&D department into Kisi labs with its first product experiment “Drone Guard” designed to be the doorman of the future. Drone Guard is an on-demand drone doorman service — an off-the-shelf drone equipped with a smartphone carrying the Kisi app, which uses Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi to unlock and manage door access. See how it works below:

Centralized the Kisi Community: Office Automation & Physical Security Forum
We also launched the Kisi Office Automation Community for the IT, design, and security professionals who are bringing new IoT technology to the office environment. Be sure to register and submit a project anytime you work on a physical security project, automate something in your office, or have a question for the community.

Organized The Future of Work Event Series
Almost exactly one year ago, we hosted the first Future of Work panel discussion which brought together the founders of Kisi, Managed by Q, PivotDesk, and Envoy. The conversation centered around how a smart and connected office can affect company culture and business as a whole. As leaders of the smart office movement, each panelist brought a unique perspective to the conversation.
The panel came together at Managed by Q’s headquarters in New York City and was moderated by the Wall Street Journal’s tenured Real Estate Editor, Peter Grant. The cross section between real estate, technology, and business proved to be a conversation largely focused on how technology in commercial real estate can benefit company culture.
Revealed New Logo and Branding
We updated the Kisi brand with new fonts, colors, patterns, and most visible, a new logo and mascot! For press and media purposes, please download the logos on our website.
At Our Core: Kisi Crux
This year we also unveiled our new ‘Kisi Crux’, our new logo representative of our vision here at Kisi: bold, dynamic, and simple. It can also be interepreted as a keyhole, which is aligned with our mission of ‘Making Keys Easy’.
Meet Our Friend: Kisi Kong
With our new logo, also came our new mascot: Kisi Kong. This year we introduced the world to our friendly primate as a symbol of our core company values. Mr. Kong is strong, self-serving, powerful, and empathetic: values we preach everyday in our office. We brought Kisi Kong to life with Simon Oxley.
So, what’s up next?
As we mentioned above, the next big announcement is when we start to ship the new readers and NFC cards in February. On the roadmap this year we have excited new advancements with our iOS and Android apps, updates to the firmware on our hardware, and a few things you haven’t even imagined yet.
Thanks again for an eventful 2016 — we owe all of our success to the customers and keyholders we serve!
